Joe’s phrase: “Joy is the matriarch of a family of emotions and she won’t come into a house where her children aren’t welcome.” This captures one of his most fundamental teachings — you cannot selectively allow emotions. If you block grief, anger, or fear, joy doesn’t arrive either.

The client in this session lost both parents young and wisely compartmentalized all emotions to survive. The result: a life devoid of pleasure where everything is done because “that’s the right thing to do” rather than from genuine want. High-achieving on the outside, blank on the inside.

“Everything I do is just because that’s the right thing to do and not because I want to do this.”

This is not brokenness — it was brilliant survival strategy. But the cost is that joy requires the full family of emotions to be welcomed home.
