A simple question transforms relationship communication: “Do you want me to just listen, do you want questions, or do you want advice?” Joe and Tara discovered that so many fights arose because one person assumed what the other wanted — typically, one partner would rush to solve a problem while the other just wanted to be heard.

This creates the classic dynamic where a husband constantly helps his wife solve problems (making her feel undermined and belittled) while the wife provides emotional support when the husband actually wants practical advice. Both feel unmet, and resentment accumulates over years.

Joe and Tara found that they almost never wanted coaching or fixing from each other. They wanted presence — someone to be with them. “I just want you to be with me. I don’t want you to try to fix me.” Once Joe stopped trying to solve Tara’s problems and just listened, she would sort out the whole thing herself. “She’ll just talk and then all of a sudden she’ll know what to do.”

The deeper realization was letting go of feeling responsible for his partner’s happiness. “I used to think I had to do so much. And now it’s like, oh no, I can just be with her. It’s just that easy.”

“Do you just want to be listened to? Do you want some questions or do you want advice?”

“I don’t have to do anything. I can just sit there and be loving and listen to her and she will sort out the whole thing herself.”
