Throughout the coaching session with Samson, Joe keeps pointing to what’s happening right now, not the story about what happens out there. Samson closes his eyes, hedges his question, adds qualifiers about how he’s “done the work” — and each time, Joe names it: “It’s happening right now.”

“You’re not actually directly saying, ‘Here’s the thing.’ And it seems like it revolves around if there’s any way you will be perceived as weak.”

Samson’s pattern of not being fully seen isn’t something that happens elsewhere — it’s visible live in the conversation. He’s demonstrating the very thing he’s asking about. Joe’s coaching moves are to keep redirecting to presence: “Open your eyes. Be with me. Ask me the question in one sentence.”

This illustrates a principle: you don’t need someone’s backstory to see their pattern. The pattern is performing itself right now, in how they speak, what they avoid, and where their body goes.
