People resist gratitude not because they’re ungrateful but because they’re scared. If you allow yourself to be happy, you might not be prepared for the inevitable doom around the corner.

“The real core as to why people resist gratitude is the fact that they’re scared that they won’t be prepared for the inevitable doom that is always around the corner if they are happy.”

This is hypervigilance dressed up as wisdom. The logic says: staying alert to threats is smart, and happiness makes you drop your guard. Therefore, happiness is dangerous.

But the opposite is true. Gratitude opens perception rather than narrowing it. A grateful, present person sees more opportunities and threats than an anxious, contracted one. Fear doesn’t make you more prepared—it makes you more blind.
