Theo wonders why, with hundreds of thousands of people pleased with him, the craving for approval still feels empty. Joe’s answer is that the attention is never actually let in. The hungry ghost — the endless chasing of validation — stays hungry not because there isn’t enough, but because what’s there is never digested.

“Typically you keep on chasing the attention if you can’t actually fully allow that in, allow that to break your heart.”

The cure isn’t more attention. It’s allowing the love and impact already present to land — to be grateful for it, to let it break your heart, to recognize the real difference you’re making for people. And it doesn’t require a crowd. Most of us can’t even fully take in the love of our own kids or spouse. Learning to digest that is what finally quiets the craving.

“If you want to get rid of that hungry ghost, you have to digest the attention.”

This is the same mechanism behind so many empty pursuits: the wanting persists because the having is never metabolized.
