Joe draws a precise distinction between two states that look similar from the outside but feel completely different inside. In dissociation, you see yourself from outside by leaving your body—it requires effort, tension, and a cutting off from your core. In non-personal awareness, you see yourself from outside while staying fully embodied—it requires no effort, and the core remains completely open.

The man in the session describes the difference vividly. From the non-personal perspective, he can see himself clearly—“strong, skillful, lovable, interesting”—along with anger, resentment, and fear. But without the usual personal commentary. “You’re getting the news as a blurb instead of like MSNBC or Fox News and all the commentary.”

This non-personal awareness is available as a way of living, not just an occasional exercise. Joe invites him to “just live in the non-personal for a minute” without being outside himself—staying embodied while dropping the personal storyline. The result is a perspective where reality can be seen as-is, without the layers of judgment and self-attack.
