Dissociation is typically understood as a problem—a way of leaving the body to avoid overwhelming emotions. But Joe reveals that the mechanism of dissociation contains a hidden gift. The protective function of dissociation is actually the capacity for non-personal awareness—seeing yourself from outside without the usual personal commentary and judgment.

The key distinction is whether the body stays in the game. Dissociation without the body is pure defense—numbing, leaving, checking out. But the same “outside view” with the body fully engaged becomes something entirely different: refreshing, sweet, “like a wave of warm honey.” The man in the coaching session discovers this directly when Joe guides him to see himself from outside without the usual effort of dissociating.

“All that dissociation has an amazing gift in it if you keep your body in the game. Dissociation without the body is one thing. The non-personalness that dissociation—that’s the protection—is the non-personalness. But if you do it with the body in the game, it’s refreshing.”

This reframing honors the survival mechanism rather than pathologizing it. The capacity to see non-personally was developed for protection, but it can be reclaimed as a gateway to equanimity and self-compassion.
