Tristan describes the optimal state for speaking: you should be “discovering the words as they appear out of your mouth at the same time your audience is.” The moment you start thinking about frameworks or trying to get words right, you’re out of flow. This applies equally to music, surfing, coaching — any performance domain.

The sign that you were in flow is that you barely remember what you said afterward. Both Joe and Tristan describe this — walking out of coaching or speaking sessions with no memory of their words, only to hear from others that it was their best work. Memory has no function in a state of total presence.

Training should optimize for this state, not for content mastery. Short reps, supportive environment, and practicing for state rather than correctness. The goal isn’t to remember your speech but to forget yourself while giving it.

“You should be discovering the words as they appear out of your mouth at the same time your audience is.”
