Most people in society are heavily head-oriented. Joe’s approach is pragmatic: take access points wherever you can get them. For the majority of people, that means starting with the intellect — deconstructing the stories and beliefs enough to create space for them to notice and enjoy their emotions or their nervous system. Once the intellectual trap opens, people naturally find their way to breath work, body awareness, and emotional exploration.

However, this isn’t universal. Some people — those Joe calls “hysteric” (using Reichian terminology, not pejoratively) — are already so in touch with their emotional and energetic experience that nervous system work is the natural first step. They’ll feel the breath immediately and know it’s good. For them, the intellectual structure would be a detour.

The key principle: effective transformation works on all three systems (intellect, emotion, nervous system), but the entry point should match the person.

“Most people in society are far more head oriented, so if you can crack open the intellectual trap that they put themselves in, that’s often the first step because that allows them to pay attention to their emotion and/or their nervous system.”
