When you’re overwhelmed and can’t process emotions in the moment — you’re in a meeting, a hospital, a crisis — breath is the immediate tool. Slowing your breath, making it equal, calming the nervous system.

“We can’t control our nervous system but we can control our breath and our breath controls our nervous system.”

Joe notes this is universal — yoga, Navy SEALs, same principle. But he warns that breath work can also be used to repress emotions. If someone keeps breathing to avoid ever feeling, “that can be a world of hurt.” Breath is a bridge to buy time, not a replacement for emotional processing.
