Most to-do lists are just externalized self-criticism.
“What you’re doing is just taking that critical self-talk that you have in your head and making a list.”
The Trap
Two outcomes from a typical to-do list:
- Complete it → Feel controlled by the list
- Don’t complete it → Feel guilty
Neither gets you the life you want. You’re either a slave to your list or a failure who can’t keep up.
The Alternative
Instead of “what I have to do,” ask:
“What are the three things I can do that make everything else either easier or irrelevant?”
This shifts from obligation to leverage. The executive who adopted this approach worked less, grew his company more, and felt better.
Why It Matters
We want to make an impact. Checking off busywork doesn’t satisfy—it exhausts. Doing high-leverage work that matters energizes.
