When the participant names writing as something they want, Joe asks them to consider writing for just 15 minutes a day. Their response: “Very much possible. I have that much time. I have more time than that.” The mind gives no objection at all. But then the participant reveals the pattern: “It just makes it very big in my head that I have to do this task, and because it is big in my head, I think through it the entire day.”

The mind inflates the task — not because the task is actually large, but because wanting triggers anxiety. Joe notices this pattern throughout the session: every time the participant confronts what they want, their emotional response is anxiety. “Oh I might do what I want — anxiety. Oh I could just explore — anxiety.”

“When you confront what you want, your emotional response to that is anxiety.”

The time scarcity is manufactured. Jeff Bezos spends three hours every morning “wandering” — and the participant has more free time than Bezos. The real block isn’t time or task complexity. It’s the anxiety that arises when desire meets the possibility of actually pursuing it.
