Underneath every harsh statement the inner critic makes is an act of care. When it says “lose weight,” it cares about your health. When it says “work harder,” it cares about your security. The delivery is terrible—like the worst micromanaging boss—but the underlying motivation is protective.
“There is nothing it says to you that isn’t an act of care, granted it says it horribly. It’s like the worst micromanaging boss.”
When you can translate the inner critic’s harsh words into the care underneath, the relationship shifts. You can even ask it to express its care more gently. This doesn’t mean the voice is right about what to do—it means recognizing that even the most punishing self-talk originates from a part that wants to keep you safe.
