When your thinking becomes either/or, you’re scared.

“Binary thinking happens when we’re scared.”

The Meeting Pattern

Watch any meeting where someone feels threatened—suddenly the discussion shifts from “let’s solve this together” to “it’s either my way or your way.”

The person fears losing scope, losing control, getting a bad review. Fear triggers binary: attack or defend.

Development Beyond Binary

As people grow and evolve, they gain the ability to hold contrary beliefs simultaneously. Both can be true:

  • Free will exists AND doesn’t exist
  • This approach has wisdom AND that approach has wisdom

“If you feel like you have a belief that you can’t see the other side of, it’s holding back your freedom.”

The Practical Check

When you notice yourself thinking in absolutes—right/wrong, good/bad, this/that—ask: what am I afraid of?

The fear is the real issue, not the belief.
